Is a bit more traditional, has mixed reviews and views itself as a more “professional” space. Has windows! Has Kodak paper for sale, also has a black and white printing room that is considerably overpriced. The writer has no personal experience but only heard positive reviews. Similar reservations should be made about quality if you need high end professionally sharp color-perfect prints or like working in solitude. Similar to Gowanus, Bushwick community darkroom provides various classes, services and types of printing with the option of a member price. *if the sharpest results are desired, it’s recommended to bring your own lenses They also have private lessons with thoughtful and kind teachers who won't make you feel like an idiot for $100-$300 depending on how much time you spend. If you're going to print 3 days a month or more this is by far the most reasonable option the writer is aware of in the city. You also get a cute occasional lil peep into the drama of Tyler Mitchelles studio next door. For $300 a month you have unlimited access to both color and black and white printing and I believe some level of bw film development. The best space for both Black and White and Color that the writer is aware of particularly for newcomers who are interested in learning is the Gowanus Community darkroom in Gowanus. Most high-end (noncommunity) print labs make their money off exhibition prints and not individual rental hours, keep that in mind when asking for availability or choosing a space to learn in. I’m looking forward to entering darkroom prints into next year’s Artsy Salon. There are various cultures of darkroom spaces some are older and less friendly to newcomers and novices, others are far more community oriented but may be less precise if you have strict professional needs of consistency or predictability as small color shifts may occur, things may not be perfectly sharp compared to the fancy lab, etc. I feel a deeper sense of ownership over the final product, too. I can’t say that printing in the darkroom gives me a better result than scanning and printing digitally – not yet anyway – but I definitely enjoy the process more. My results are nowhere near great yet, but I’m really enjoying the process. Since the workshop, I’ve returned to the darkroom in Bushwick. This repetition and experimentation is how humans acquire new skills, and both programming and film photography imbue this same learning philosophy.) (Again, this is kind of like programming where you try something and see if it works. It’s all very subjective and you just sort of experiment until you get the results you want. But in the darkroom, you cut test strips and try over and over with different exposure times and contrast levels until you see what you like. Film photography is obviously analogue, but there’s some science to it around metering light to get a proper exposure you can only take the photo once, so you need to get it right. What has fascinated me for so long about this process is just how analogue it is. This creates a negative image of the negative. When you want to create a photo from your negative, you basically shine a lamp from one side of the negative to project the image (enlarged) onto a piece of light-sensitive paper.

It’s called a negative because the dark parts of the photo are clear, and the brights parts of the photo are dark. Here’s the gist of how things work: when you take a film photo, a negative is created on a piece of plastic. Johnny Patience was great, and I learned a tonne. Having someone experienced there to show me the ropes in the Bushwick Community Darkroom was the perfect way to try it out. I had been looking forward to this all summer – darkroom printing is arcane, requires equipment and chemicals, and a dark room. A few weeks ago, I participated in NYCWLK, a darkroom workshop and photo walk.
